The Cariñena grape variety is a red grape variety that is grown all over the world, although it originated in Aragon. It is a variety of late sprouting and is sensitive to insects and fungi. The warm and Mediterranean climates are ideal for its cultivation.


How is the variety of Cariñena wines?


It has a tendency to produce small buds with clusters located close to the vine. It is very sensitive to insects and fungi that attack the vineyards. However, when grown under ideal conditions, the Cariñena variety can produce wines of great quality and complexity.


How is Cariñena wine?


The darkest, deepest and most mineral wines are found in Priorat where they are usually combined with Red Garnacha. This combination gives rise to the best red wines in the world. In France it is customary to combine it with varieties such as Garnacha, Syrah or Mourvédre to obtain very balanced coupages, more intense than those of the DOC Rioja, where the wines have a very intense color, but with a very characteristic freshness. The aroma of these wines is reminiscent of plums and bushes, their color varies from cherry red with violet tones to very dark colors. Its acidity is abundant, as are the tannins found in the mouth. Cariñena wines are complex and seductive, very difficult to obtain. Produce such well-balanced and structured Cariñena wines with a lot of body, acids and a high alcohol level. Cariñena wines are slightly aromatic, timid on the nose, but delicious on the palate with citrus notes. Normally this variety is used to make coupages with other varieties. In Catalonia, Cariñena wine from Empordà stands out since it is where we find more hectares of this variety.
