Conca del Riu Anoia sparkling wines are produced in the Penedès region, near Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. Although they are not part of the Cava denomination of origin, they are a style of sparkling wine that is highly valued and appreciated for its quality and uniqueness.
These wines are made mainly from the Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada grape varieties, which grow in the lowlands of the Anoia River, in the Conca del Riu Anoia. They may also include other local varieties such as Chardonnay or Pinot Noir.
The production of these wines follows the traditional method, like that of cavas, with a second fermentation in the bottle. The minimum aging is 9 months, but many producers opt for longer aging to achieve greater complexity and depth of flavour.
The sparkling wines from Conca del Riu Anoia are characterized by their refreshing acidity, light body and an aromatic intensity and fruity flavour reminiscent of apples, citrus fruits, and flowers. Some producers also make sparkling wines with more complex characteristics, such as toasted and dried fruit notes.
