The Melon de Bourgogne grape variety, originally from France, is a medium-ripening strain that adapts well to the climatic conditions of the region. Known for its frost resistance and susceptibility to botrytis, it produces white wines with a neutral flavor, low acidity and subtle notes of muscat and citrus, ideal for distillation.
Originally from Burgundy, Melon de Bourgogne has been cultivated since the 13th century. Initially known as Plant de Bourgogne, it spread throughout the Loire Valley in the 17th century under the name of Muscadet. Today, it is the dominant strain in the Muscadet region, cultivated mainly in the departments of Loire-Atlantique and Maine-et-Loire.
The Melon de Bourgogne cultivation area in France amounts to 9,550 hectares, with a strong downward trend. This variety adapts well to the oceanic climate of the region, characterized by abundant rains in autumn, which favors its rapid growth and maturation. The varied soils, ranging from shale to limestone clays, contribute to the diversity of flavors in the wines.
Melon de Bourgogne produces fresh and simple wines in their youth, with marked acidity and richness in aromatic precursors. The best wines exhibit apple and citrus flavors, with underlying mineral notes that reflect the region's maritime geography.
Melon de Bourgogne wines pair well with dishes such as scallops braised in white wine and garlic, goat cheese and arugula salad, and Middle Eastern lemon lentil soup. Their high acidity and aromatic subtlety make them suitable for aging, developing new aromas and complexity over time.
