Gewürztraminer is a white grape variety native to the Alsace region in north-eastern France, although it is also grown in other parts of the world, such as Germany, Italy, the United States and Australia. It is characterized by being a grape with pink or red skin, which gives its wines a deep golden yellow colour and a very distinctive aromatic and taste profile.
Gewürztraminer wines are usually dry white wines, although some sweet ones can also be found, with an intense and complex aromatic profile that includes floral notes, such as rose and jasmine, and fruit notes, such as lychee, peach, apricot, and lemon. On the palate, they are usually wines with moderate acidity and medium body, with a flavour of exotic fruits and a characteristic spicy note reminiscent of ginger.
Gewürztraminer wines are excellent to accompany a wide variety of foods, especially spicy and aromatic dishes, such as Thai or Indian cuisine, as well as strong cheeses and pates. They can also pair well with shellfish and oily fish, such as salmon.
When it comes to buying Gewürztraminer wines, it is important to note that this variety is not well known outside of the producing countries and can be hard to find in mainstream wine shops. However, some specialty wine retailers from Alsace and other places where Gewürztraminer is grown may have a selection available.
