Extra-aged rum is a high-end category of rum that has undergone an extensive aging process in oak barrels. This type of rum is characterized by its exceptional smoothness, complexity, and deep flavours. The term "extra-aged" indicates that it has been aged for a significantly long period, usually, more than 12 years, although some may have been aged for decades.
The main difference between aged rum and extra-aged rum lies in the aging time. While aged rum refers to a minimum aging period, extra-aged rum implies a long aging process that goes beyond the minimum requirements. This gives extra-aged rum greater complexity, smoothness, and more intense flavours than standard-aged rum.
There is no fixed time that determines when rum is considered extra-aged, as it varies according to the regulations and practices of each producer. In general, however, extra-aged rum has been aged for at least 12 years, although many producers opt for longer periods, going as far as decades of aging to achieve even more complex and refined flavor profiles.
