Whiskey is an alcoholic beverage with a great tradition and flavor that is obtained through the distillation of fermented cereals. Its origin dates to the Middle Ages in Ireland and Scotland, and since then it has been a very popular drink around the world.
The whiskey-making process involves several stages. First, the beans are ground and then mixed with hot water in a container called a mash tun. This mixture forms a kind of "soup" known as "must". Yeast is then added to the wort to start the fermentation process, where the sugars are converted to alcohol. After fermentation, the resulting liquid, known as "malt beer", is subjected to distillation in pot stills. During distillation, the alcohol is separated and concentrated through different heating and cooling processes. The resulting liquid, known as "new spirit" or "neutral grain alcohol", has a high alcoholic content. The new spirit is introduced into oak barrels, where it ages for a specific period, which may vary according to the legislation of each country. During the process of maturation in barrels, the whiskey acquires unique flavors, aromas, and characteristics due to the interaction with the wood. Finally, once the whiskey has matured sufficiently, it is bottled and distributed so that whiskey lovers can enjoy its distinctive flavor. It is worth mentioning that there are different styles of whiskey, such as Scotch, Irish, bourbon, and single malt, each with their own variations in the brewing process and specific characteristics.
