What grape varieties do we find in the sparkling wines of the Central Valley?

In the sparkling wines from the Central Valley of Chile, there are a variety of grapes used in their production, the most common being Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for white sparkling wines, which provide fruity notes and freshness. For the sparkling rosés, the Pinot Noir grape is used, which contributes with its fruity character and delicate color. In addition, some wineries also experiment with other varieties such as Moscato and Riesling, which adds diversity to the spectrum of flavors and styles of Central Valley sparkling wines.

How are Central Valley sparkling wines made?

Sparkling wines from the Central Valley of Chile are mainly made using the Charmat method, also known as the closed tank fermentation method. The grapes, which are usually Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for white sparkling wines, or Pinot Noir for rosé sparkling wines, are harvested and gently pressed to extract the must. This must is then fermented in stainless steel tanks under controlled conditions, where yeasts and sugars are added to start the second fermentation. During this phase, carbon dioxide is produced, which is trapped in the wine, creating bubbles. After a period of tank aging, the wine is filtered and bottled.

The result is a fresh and fruity sparkling wine that reflects the characteristics of Chilean grapes and the experience of winemakers in the region.
