Red wines D.O. Valdeorras come from the Valdeorras wine region, located in the province of Orense, in the autonomous community of Galicia, in northwestern Spain. Although Valdeorras is best known for its white wines, it also produces red wines of great quality and character.
In the D.O. Valdeorras, two varieties of red grapes are mainly grown, which are the most representative and used in the production of red wines. These varieties are Mencía and Garnacha Tintorera. Mencía is a native grape of the region that has become the star variety in the production of red wines in Valdeorras. This grape brings elegance and freshness to the wines, with fruity and spicy aromas, and soft tannins that make them very pleasant on the palate. On the other hand, the Garnacha Tintorera, also known as Alicante Bouschet, is a grape of Mediterranean origin that has adapted well to the conditions of Valdeorras. The production of the red wines of the D.O. Valdeorras follows a traditional and careful process. After the manual harvest, the red grapes, mainly Mencía and Garnacha Tintorera, are destemmed and crushed to obtain the must. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, where the skins of the grapes add colour, aromas, and tannins to the must. Maceration is key to extracting the desired characteristics of the wine. After fermentation, some wines may undergo an aging process in oak barrels to add complexity and aging notes. Finally, the wine is bottled and is ready to delight with its fruity, elegant, and balanced character, which reflects the unique essence of the D.O. Valdeorras.
The red wines of the D.O. Valdeorras are an excellent option to accompany a variety of dishes. Thanks to their fruity and balanced character, they harmonize very well with Galician cuisine, such as Galician octopus, empanadas, roast meats, and grilled fish. They are also ideal to accompany Mediterranean dishes, such as pasta with tomato and herb sauces, rice dishes and pizzas.
