Japanese Gins

Japanese gins are an increasingly popular choice among gin lovers around the world. These gins are characterized by their smooth and delicate flavor, as well as their exceptional quality, the result of the combination of traditional distillation techniques and the incorporation of Japanese botanicals.

How are Japanese gins made?

Japanese gins are made using a combination of traditional techniques and modern methods. The manufacturing process begins with the distillation of a high-quality neutral alcohol, generally from grains such as rice or barley. Like Japanese whiskey production, Japanese gins often use traditional copper pot stills for distillation. These stills allow a smooth and precise distillation, preserving the flavors and aromas of the botanicals used. The selection of botanicals is fundamental in the elaboration of Japanese gin. In addition to juniper, traditional botanicals such as coriander, angelica root and citrus peel are used, as well as local and indigenous Japanese botanicals such as green tea, yuzu or sakura (cherry blossoms).

Some Japanese gins also go through a maceration process, where the botanicals are immersed in neutral alcohol to extract their flavors and aromas. Others may choose to use a vaporization technique, where the botanicals are placed in a steam chamber and alcohol is passed through them, absorbing their essences. Once distilled, the gin is mixed with water to adjust the alcohol content and undergoes a rest period to allow the flavors to blend and balance.

In short, Japanese gins are made by distilling a high-quality neutral spirit together with a selection of botanicals, which can include both traditional ingredients and indigenous Japanese botanicals. The process combines traditional and modern techniques to obtain gins with unique and distinctive flavor profiles.

What brands of Japanese gin are there?

There are several brands of gin made in Japan recognized in the market, but in Lavinateria we only have the Gin Roku.

Gin Roku, also known as Roku Gin, is a Japanese gin that has gained popularity in recent years. Roku means "six" in Japanese and refers to the six key Japanese botanicals used to make it. All six botanicals are individually distilled at the Suntory distillery in Osaka, Japan. Its base is a high-quality neutral alcohol, which is distilled in traditional copper stills.

Roku gin is prized for its attention to detail, its focus on Japanese botanicals, and its distinctive flavor. It is a representation of the growing influence and quality of Japanese gins in the international market.
