Belgian Gins

Belgian gin has gained recognition in recent years due to its quality and distinctive taste.

How are Belgian gins made?

Belgian gins are made following a process like other gins, but with their own distinctive characteristics. They generally start with a base of neutral alcohol, which can be distilled from grains or from other ingredients. Selected botanicals are added to this base, which vary by brand and style of gin. Some common botanicals include juniper, coriander, angelica, cardamom, citrus, and spices.

The exact combination of botanicals and their ratio are kept secret by each distillery, as it is what gives them their distinctive and characteristic flavor. Once the botanicals have been macerated or added to the base alcohol, the mixture is distilled in pot stills to extract the desired flavors and aromas. The distillation process can include several stages to refine and purify the gin.

After distillation, the gin may undergo additional filtering and/or dilution with water to achieve the desired alcohol content. Some Belgian gins may also undergo a period of rest or aging in oak barrels to further develop their flavor and complexity.

The result is a Belgian gin with a distinctive flavor profile, which can range from herbal and spicy flavors to citrus and floral notes. Belgian gins are characterized by their craftsmanship and attention to detail, which contributes to their reputation for high quality and excellence in gin production.

What Belgian gin brands are there?

There are several recognized Belgian gin brands on the market, but in the winery, we only have Filliers Dry Gin. A gin produced in one of the oldest distilleries in Belgium, the Filliers distillery. This gin stands out for its smooth and elegant flavor. It uses a combination of juniper, coriander, angelica, and other botanicals to create a balanced and sophisticated flavor profile.

Filliers Dry Gin is appreciated both by lovers of classic gin and by those looking for a sophisticated and refined taste. Its reputation is based on its craftsmanship, the careful selection of ingredients and the tradition of the Filliers distillery, which makes it a prominent choice within Belgian gin.
