Scottish Gins

Although Scotland is primarily known for its whiskey, there is also a growing industry of Scottish gins which are gaining popularity around the world. Scottish gins are made with a blend of botanicals that vary by style and brand, but generally include a mix of juniper, angelica root, coriander, citrus, and other aromatic ingredients.

How are Scottish gins made?

Scottish gins are made following a careful and traditional process. It starts with the neutral alcohol base, which is usually obtained from grains such as barley, wheat, or oats. This alcohol is blended with a selection of botanicals, which may include juniper berries, coriander, angelica, angelica root, orris root, cassia, licorice, cardamom, and other secret ingredients. The botanicals are added to the alcohol in a copper still, where distillation occurs. During this process, vapors rise and pass through the botanicals, extracting their flavors and aromas. The vapors are then condensed and collected as distilled gin, which can then be filtered and diluted with water to achieve the desired alcohol level.

The result is a Scottish gin with a variety of flavor profiles, from the classic and traditional to the more experimental and contemporary.
