Mencia wine

The Mencía grape is an autochthonous grape from the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, outside of there we do not find it in other vineyards. The Mencía grape adapts perfectly to the temperate and humid climate near the Atlantic, very different from the Mediterranean climate that this variety cannot bear. Mencía wines have been gaining popularity and currently it is a variety that has an enormous aging capacity. Where is the Mencía red variety grown?

The Mencía grape is the autochthonous variety of the province of León, particularly in the D.O. Bierzo, D.O. Valdeorras and D.O. Ribeira Sacra. In these areas they achieve an exceptional wine level that marks the personality of the territory in which the wine is produced. Mencía Ribeira Sacra wines or Mencía Bierzo wines are of high quality, unique and incomparable. They have huge vineyards with large wine productions of the Mencía variety.

What are the peculiarities of red wine made from the Mencía grape?

The Mencía grape is similar in color and texture to the Cabernet Franc variety, although the characteristics of the Mencía grape are very different. Raspberry color with exotic tones. On the nose it has floral aromas, red fruits and mineral touches. In the mouth it denotes the great expression of the terroir with a very extravagant sweetness.

What pairs well with Mencía wine?

Mencía wines present a very wide pairing. Crianza Mencías combine well with game meats such as lamb. The young mencía go well with all kinds of cheeses, fish and octopus.
